Melih Fereli

  • Mr. Melih Fereli was born in Istanbul in 1948 into an immigrant family from Macedonia. After completing his secondary education, he attended Robert College, Istanbul (BSc. 1970) and Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA (MSc. 1971), where he studied "fluid mechanics".

  • Upon completion of his military service as an officer of the Turkish Navy, Mr. Fereli was recruited by Lucas Industries PLC as a "management trainee", where he served at senior levels, primarily in strategic and market-oriented planning, until 1988. For a brief period thereafter, he worked for the family company and later as a free-lance management consultant.

  • Mr. Fereli has been a long-standing singing member (tenor) of the world-renowned Philharmonia Chorus, London. He served as General Director of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts from March 1993 to February 2001, having led a strong team organizing numerous international festivals, biennials, private cultural events, panel discussions and workshops, over a period of eight years, as well as having supervised the partial construction of a multi-million USD cultural centre.

  • Mr. Fereli is a member of UNESCO's Mediterranean Council for Culture and a trustee of Turkish Educational Volunteers Foundation and Cultural Awareness Foundation, as well as serving on the boards of Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Mersin Festival, ITU-MIAM Centre for Advanced Studies in Music, Platform, and "Şimdi-Now" Festival, a series promoting Turkish art and culture in Europe, the first of which was held in Berlin in 2004.
